3 Students Arrested for Burning Dormitory

Three students from St. Mary’s Ndeiya Girls were on Tuesday, July 25, arrested by police after being accused of setting their dormitory on fire.

The students were zeroed in by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and are being held at Tigoni Police Station pending interrogation.

Ndeiya Sub-County Education Director, Kariuki Mwangi, revealed that 236 students were affected by the fire incident, accounting for almost half the population.

The fire also affected neighbouring dormitories leading to 177 more losses in terms of beddings and personal property.

In total, 410 students were affected by the fire.

The incident which occurred on the night of Saturday, July 22, left scores of students out in the cold. Firefighters and medics from the Kenya Airport Authority, however, were swift in salvaging the situation.

The school was, therefore, closed indefinitely awaiting the board’s directive on the next move. Meanwhile, the administration stated that it was working on measures to ensure the academic calendar is not affected and students resume studies in good time.

To mitigate the damage, Limuru Constituency legislature Engineer John Kiragu donated 250 mattresses to ease the parents from the burden of buying new ones.

“I will also engage the administration so that there is proper surveillance through CCTV so that we can watch everything going on in the school,” Kiragu stated.

The lawmaker noted that his office, through NG-CDF emergency kitty, has set aside funds to assist parents to rebuild a modernised dormitory.

In addition, Kiragu stated that he will ensure the students are comfortable by availing all the necessities they might need in the school such as water and other infrastructure. This, the MP noted, will help ease unrest within the school and ensure students have a conducive environment for their studies.

The legislature also applauded the administration, students and local community for cooperating through the situation and ensuring that no injuries nor casualties occurred.
