Qualifications

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have: –

  • served for a minimum period of twelve (12) years, three (3) of which should be at the grade of Assistant Registrar of Trade Unions, CSG ‘7’ or in a comparable relevant position in the wider public service;
  • a Bachelors Degree in Law, (LLB) with a Post Graduate Diploma in legal studies from the Kenya School of Law; 
  • a Masters Degree in any social science from a university recognized in Kenya;
  • admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya;
  • a valid and current membership with the Law Society of Kenya.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • overseeing the due process of registration of trade unions, employers’ organizations, federations and amalgamations;
  • guiding the promotion of a healthy regulatory framework for the operations of trade unions, employer’s organizations and federations;
  • Oversees the due process of registration of trade unions, employers’ organizations, federations and amalgamations;
  • overseeing the registration of Trade Unions, employers’ organizations and federations constitutions that comply with the Labour Relations Act;
  • overseeing general regulation of trade unions in accordance with the law and the Trade Unions Individual Constitutions;
  • issuing  circulars to trade unions, employers’ organizations and federations hold general elections after the five-year period as stipulated by the law;
  • spearheads the registration of the newly elected trade unions, employers’ organizations and federations’ officials upon completion of the general elections;
  • advising the National Labour Board on registration, suspension and deregistration of trade unions and employers’ organizations;
  • providing information and advice to employees’ organisations and to the public in general, with respect to the rights and obligations of trade unions;
  • overseeing the implementation of court orders directed to the Registrar on specific reports in certain circumstances to guide the courts the determination of cases;
  • overseeing the preparation and submission of instructions to the Office of Attorney General for concurrence on representation in court cases whenever the Registrar has been cited as a respondent and appearing in court as and when required; and
  • overseeing the Registration of elected trade unions officials after elections and whenever such changes are made;
