The driver of the ill-fated Easy Coach bus that killed a student from Chavakali Boys High School has today been arraigned and charged before a Kisumu law court.

George Onyango Riako pleaded not guilty to 10 counts including causing the death of one student and injuring 9 others and was released on a Ksh.200,000 cash bail or an alternative of Ksh.500,000 bond.

Appearing before Winam Law Court Principal Magistrate D.K Mtai, the court heard that on April 1, Onyango was over speeding leading to the accident that killed one Joseph Mwadulo.

In the other 9 counts, the court heard that the accused deliberately applied an emergency break making the vehicle swerve and land on its side leading to the injuries of nine students.

His lawyer had earlier asked the court for reasonable bond terms saying his client was not a flight risk and would be willing to present himself before court whenever needed.

Mtai ordered the prosecution side to avail witness statements to the accused lawyer and that the matter shall be mentioned on 25/04/2024 where a hearing date will be set.

A total of 23 students are yet to record statements with the police and there is a likelihood that the ODPP will later amend the charge sheet to include their statements.

Onyango was reported missing on the accident scene immediately after the accident.
